As 2019 comes to an end, many people are starting to think about what they want out of the coming year. Resolutions are being drafted and ideas are being tossed around. Who do you want to be in 2020? One thing many people are considering is finding a new job. Research shows that the longer you stay in a dead end job, the longer it will take for you to accomplish your career goals. This is because staying at a job that is comfortable and familiar is far easier than taking the plunge and finding something new. You might be paid well, you might get along with your coworkers, you might like your office space, but oftentimes upon closer inspection people realize that they are not engaged with their work and lack the motivation to truly succeed in their career. Growing your career and changing jobs SHOULD be one of your New Year’s Resolutions for 2020. Why? Well, here are some things you should consider:
Change can be amazing for your life, both personally and professionally.
- A new career can be just the thing to jump-start your life. You will find yourself more invigorated, interested in your work, and excited about what future opportunities it can bring you. This can transfer over to your personal life as well, motivating you to finally do the thing you’ve been putting off for ages.
You will learn more.
- You might be comfortable in your current position, but how often do you feel challenged? How many times a week are you growing your experience or learning something new? Chances are, not often. But at a new job, you not only get to utilize your skills in different ways, you also get to explore new things. You can increase your technical and soft skills, helping with your resume overall, when you change careers.
Your resume is going to look better.
- Yes, people generally don’t like job-hopping, but if you’ve been at the same place for years and years, making a change (especially if that change gives you a better title and more responsibilities) and trying something new is exactly the kind of thing hiring managers look out for. Plan today for your life tomorrow and make sure your resume will look its best 10 or 20 years down the line.
Switching jobs can mean MUCH more money.
- Staying with a company for more than a few years can actually devalue your worth because you start with a base salary and your raises are based on that number. But if you start looking for a new job, your starting salary will be much higher and therefore so will your future salaries/raises. As someone who is already employed, you have negotiation power as well. (Especially if you have a great recruiting company like Advanced Hires in your corner.)
You could be “gratitude shaming” yourself.
- According to career coach Lisa Lewis, “‘Gratitude shaming’ is when you beat yourself up about not appreciating what you already have. It also minimizes your deep-seated desire for more.” (Business Insider, 2019.) Make sure that you are being fulfilled in your work life. If there is something missing (strength, area of interest, organization’s culture, supporting your lifestyle, etc.), you need a change.
It will make you happy.
- A lot of time, the fear of change keeps people from making any moves because they are content, but not necessarily happy, with where they are in life. You deserve happiness. Finding the perfect career for you is one of the ways you can really connect with your own life and achieve a level of personal happiness.
