Q: I’ve applied to so many jobs, but I haven’t gotten a single interview. What am I doing wrong?

Without exact details, it’s hard to say. But there are several things you want to make sure you’re doing when applying to jobs and a few things to keep in mind when you’re job searching:

  • The unemployment pool is MUCH bigger right now due to COVID and layoffs. There are many, many people looking for work, and many of them are applying to the same jobs you are. Hiring managers are inundated with applications and that can get overwhelming. (Another reason why hiring managers should consider working with recruiting firms like Advanced Hires — we can make sure that the resumes coming across your deck are quality candidates.) You will have to exercise more patience and determination during the current economic climate.

  • You should be writing a cover letter for each job posting you apply to. You want to make sure the cover letter, or CL, sells you as an employee and person. If you are writing just a few sentences without any personalized information about the company and sending it off to 20 different employers, that is not going to help your chances.

  • How thorough is your resume? What does it look like? Is it formatted correctly? Having a great resume is KEY to landing job interviews and offers. If you haven’t updated your resume in a while, it might be time to do that. You can find some resources here, but sitting down and doing some major work on your resume can really help with your job search. This is also another reason why working with Advanced Hires is great for candidates: we will go over your resume and help you get it into perfect shape, giving you a huge leg up when we submit you to jobs.

  • You may want to consider working with a recruiting company like Advanced Hires. If you are seeing little luck applying on your own, you might not be applying to the right jobs for your skill sets, or you might be drowned out by the flood of other applicants. Advanced Hires often has access to job openings that are confidential and not posted online. We have connections in the tech industry throughout Milwaukee and can match you up with a job you might not have even known about otherwise. It’s completely free for candidates to work with Advanced Hires and we can help you find a good fit if you are struggling to find something on your own.
