Q: What should I put in my resignation letter?

Great question! Your resignation letter should be straightforward, simple, and professional. You should thank your employer for your time together, and wish them the best on their future endeavors. Do not give a long, drawn-out explanation for why you’re leaving; you don’t need to explain yourself or tell them additional details about where you’re going or why. Also make sure to not disparage or criticize the company, especially if you’re planning on using them as a reference in the future.

If you’re leaving on good terms, feel free to add an extra sentence about what you appreciated from your time there, but it’s not necessary. If you aren’t leaving on good terms, it’s better to remain polite and professional. If you have suggestions that you want to offer during an exit interview, that would be the time/place to calmly express them. Additionally, you want to make sure everything in the offer letter is spelled correctly and has proper grammar.
