Q: As a hiring manager, how can I be inclusive and add diversity to the hiring process?
Adding diversity and inclusion to your hiring process has always been important and necessary, but especially now. Here’s some ways you can work to make your space and your process more welcoming and accessible for people of all races, religions, genders, and sexualities:
- Use gender-neutral language that would appeal to a variety of people, no matter their gender or background
- Look at your company culture and determine if it is actually harmful or coming across in exclusionary ways
- Highlight any inclusive values or programs you have on your website, especially on the About Us page and Careers page
- In job descriptions, focus on roles and responsibilities, instead of personality traits, as this can discourage diverse candidates
- Don’t shy away from tough conversations about biases and culture fit; does everyone on your team look the same? How does that fit into the culture? What needs to be done to change that bias?
- Don’t automatically give preference to referral candidates because they might come from the same homogenous background as your current employees; you want a diverse pool of candidates so referrals shouldn’t be given all the preference
- Use more diverse hiring platforms and attend networking events outside of your usual community or industry to find people who can bring something new and fresh to the table
