We are excited to roll out a new blog series called Ask Advanced Hires! Part advice column, part career resource, we are here to answer your questions about job searching, hiring, culture concerns, recruiting, and business in general. If you have a question you want us to answer, submit it HERE, or DM our social media accounts. Be sure to tune in every Monday as we answer the questions that YOU want to know the answers to.
Here is our first question:
How do huge worldwide or national events impact a job search?
Whenever a world-altering event occurs, we must acknowledge that things are not “business as usual”. Everything is changing constantly and it’s unreasonable to expect that things such as hiring or job searching will not be impacted. When something big occurs, there is a reach and magnitude that is usually unprecedented.
As for how it affects a job search, that depends. Certain industries might be extremely negatively impacted. Thousands of people have been laid off or furloughed and find themselves thrown into a job search they didn’t want. For some roles, competition will be high. But there are other industries that might not have been impacted at all, such as IT. And even other industries might see a dramatic rise in job opportunities as businesses scramble to hire quality people for additional roles.
You also have to take into account that companies’ timelines might have been pushed back as well. Interviewing and onboarding might be remote, which means the actual hiring process itself can take even longer. Patience, determination, and professionalism are more important now than ever. If you practice those traits during your job search, you will find that your mental attitude is far more positive.
Of course if you are looking for help in your job search, Advanced Hires is an excellent option. Our recruiters are often aware of new positions before they are posted online, and they work with candidates to find a good match instead of just throwing resumes at a hiring manager and seeing what sticks.
